NOTE: This family took its name from the castle of Liechtenstein, near Mödling, outside Vienna. They had no conection to what is now called Liechtenstein until Pr Johann Adam bought the fief of Schellenberg (1699) and Vaduz (1712) from the impoverished Gf Jakob Hannibal von Hohenems. These two states were erected into an hereditary state of the Holy Roman Empire under the name of the Principality of Liechtenstein. Until 1842, no member of the family ever even visited this state, yet it is one of the few surviving monarchies today.
